Kindergarten, First, and Second grades are well on their way to success. They are using new series Storytown, the Harcourt series, and/or the Language Circle Program. They are practicing daily recognition/fluency of sight words, letters and sounds.
Students are writing simple phrases or sentences, using the SIOP process. Beginning English Language Learners use pictures with or without captions. Scaffolding on the pictures initially drawn, higher level students then use a graphic organizer as preparation to writing a complete paragraph.
Both first and second grades are learning how to use transitional words to better organize their writing. They are also beginning to use RARE to improve text-based writing.
I am pleased with the progress they have shown in the first marking period.
Parents: please read every day with your child. Talk about the pictures. Ask questions about the characters and what happens to them in the story. You can do this in English or Spanish. The important thing is to READ with them!
Please remind them to bring back the book they borrowed from the ELL room. They should be able to read and understand the book. When they return the book and have told me and their friends about the story, they may choose another book to take home. When they have read 10 books, they will receive a reward from me.
Thank you for all that you do for your child. It makes such a difference in their progress!
Wilmington Manor School currently has 110 students identified as English Language Learners. We have two teachers who service these students. Mrs. Valderrama teaches kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth grades. I teach kindergarten, first and second grades. We each have fifty plus children on our roster.
There is a classroom library for my students to select books to take home and read. Parents are encouraged to listen to their child read and ask questions about the selection. Discussions can take place in Spanish as well as English. Pictures can act as conversation starters in any language!
Welcome to the English Language Learner blog of Mrs. Sujan, one of the ELL teachers at Wilmington Manor School. I am looking forward to meeting you on August 22, 2007.
